Deputy UN Special Envoy to Syria, Najat Rushdi, warned today of the suspension of US food aid to Syria, which poses a threat of devastating humanitarian consequences, urging the international community to act now as Syrians' lives are at stake. Rushdi stated on her "X" platform account: "The World Food Programme warns that this could be a death sentence for millions already facing severe hunger," noting that nearly one and a half million Syrians who are still recovering from over a decade of conflict and ongoing instability now face the risk of losing essential food aid. She also explained that in addition, life-saving food support will be cut off for over 50,000 women and children, jeopardizing their health, recovery, and survival. She said: "It's not just a humanitarian crisis, it's a blow that undermines stability in an already fragile region, at a time when Syrians need global solidarity more than ever." Rushdi warned of the repercussions of suspending this aid, which would deepen suffering and fuel instability, adding: "The international community must act now. Syrians' lives are at stake."
