In a new escalation in the drone war between Russia and Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force announced today, Monday, that it shot down 76 drones out of 86 launched by Russia in a large-scale air attack targeting various parts of Ukraine from the night of August 31 to September 1.
The attacks, which included northern, southern, eastern, and central Ukraine, were carried out using "Shahed" drones and some decoy models, which were launched from various areas within Russian territory, such as Kursk, Oryol, Bryansk, Melikhovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, in addition to the Crimean Peninsula.
The Ukrainian statement mentioned that the Ukrainian air defenses, in cooperation with electronic warfare units and drones, successfully repelled almost the entire attack, reflecting a significant improvement in Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian air strikes.
On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the downing of 50 Ukrainian drones, stating that Russian air defenses intercepted the drones during the night, from midnight until 5 a.m. Moscow time.
The Ukrainian attack was repelled over several Russian regions, including Belgorod, Saratov, Samara, Orenburg, Tatarstan, in addition to areas of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In a related context, diplomatic efforts are intensifying, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with several European leaders in Paris next Thursday, in a step to activate diplomacy and open the door for a political settlement of the conflict.
European sources reported that the meeting will focus on discussing security guarantees for Ukraine in any settlement with Russia, at a time when Kyiv accuses Moscow of stalling any serious talks.
And despite the importance of the meeting, the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump is not expected in this diplomatic round.
The war continues to escalate, while international pressure on both sides increases to seek peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict for years.
