It is expected that the American President, Donald Trump, will announce today, Monday, a new plan to arm Ukraine with offensive weapons, according to what was revealed by informed sources to "Axios".
The information indicates that the plan may include long-range missiles capable of targeting sites inside Russian territory, and perhaps even Moscow, although the final decision on the type of these weapons has not been determined yet.
This move represents a significant shift in Trump's position, who previously insisted on providing Ukraine with only defensive weapons to avoid any direct escalation with Russia.
However, the rapidly changing field developments and pressures from Western allies, especially within NATO, have pushed the American administration to reconsider its approach.
Trump is scheduled to present the plan during his upcoming meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, amid international anticipation of what these talks will indicate regarding Western support for Kyiv.
This comes after Trump announced yesterday, Sunday, that the United States will send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.
He told reporters: "We will send them Patriot systems, they are in desperate need of them," without specifying the quantity yet, simply saying: "I have not agreed on the quantity yet, but they will have some of them because they need protection."
It is worth noting that this announcement comes shortly after Washington suspended some arms shipments to Kyiv, making this step a strong political and military message to Moscow.
American and European officials believe that arming Ukraine with offensive weapons could fundamentally change the course of the war and perhaps compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to reassess his position on negotiations or the continuation of military operations.
They also hope that this step will contribute to enhancing the Ukrainian forces' ability to defend their territories and regain the initiative.
