In sharp statements during the NATO summit held in the Netherlands, US President Donald Trump announced yesterday that the United States will launch a new strike against Iran if it attempts to rebuild its nuclear program.
This statement came in response to a question from a journalist about Washington's intentions to launch a new strike if Tehran resumes its nuclear activities, to which Trump replied with a single word: "Certainly".
The American escalation comes after Washington praised an Israeli intelligence report stating that the recent airstrikes targeting three nuclear facilities inside Iran caused significant disruption to the Iranian nuclear program, setting it back years.
It appears that these strikes were part of a coordinated move led by the United States to deter Tehran from continuing to develop its nuclear capabilities.
During sideline meetings at the NATO summit, Trump received unprecedented praise from the Secretary-General of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, who described him as a "strong man and a man of peace", highlighting his role in reaching a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, which was reached on Tuesday and remains in effect despite some initial tensions. Stoltenberg added, saying: "I would like to commend you for this achievement, it is important for the whole world".
Stoltenberg also praised Trump's efforts to pressure alliance countries to increase their defense spending, with all member states, except Spain, agreeing to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product to defense, which he described as an achievement not achieved by any US president in decades.
On the other hand, reactions within NATO varied regarding the strikes on Iranian facilities.
While some countries supported these actions, a number of leaders called for restraint and de-escalation, emphasizing that Iran's possession of nuclear weapons poses a real and serious threat to international security.
Trump, who appeared confident in the impact of his actions, indicated in his statements that he sees no room for tolerance with Iran's attempts to rebuild its nuclear infrastructure, affirming that the United States will continue to closely monitor the situation and will not hesitate to respond militarily if necessary.
Amidst this tense scene, the international community cautiously awaits whether Iran will actually back down, or if the region is on the brink of a new escalation.
