U.S. President Donald Trump said today, Thursday, that the chances of success for his upcoming meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska are about 75%, while the chance of failure is 25%.
Trump explained in an interview with Fox News that the meeting is like a "game of chess" and could pave the way for a second summit between the two sides, but he acknowledged that the meeting might not achieve the desired results. He added: "I will not negotiate the agreement; I will leave it to Russia and Ukraine to reach a deal between them. If the summit goes well, we will communicate with Zelensky; if it fails, I will return without contacting anyone."
The Kremlin and the White House had previously announced that the summit will be held on August 15 at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska, where the meeting will begin with a bilateral meeting between the two presidents, followed by an expanded meeting with delegations from both sides, concluding with a joint press conference.
The Russian side in the negotiations is represented by presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and the president's special representative for investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. The talks will focus on ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, along with other issues related to the relations between the two countries.
