In fiery statements reflecting the escalating tension between Washington and Moscow, US President Donald Trump attacked Russian behavior towards Ukraine yesterday, Thursday, describing it as "disgusting", indicating the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia if a quick agreement is not reached to end the military escalation.
In his remarks to reporters from the Oval Office at the White House, Trump said he is not sure if the sanctions will deter Russia, according to Reuters, but he emphasized that his country will not stand idly by what is happening in Ukraine.
Trump also announced that US special envoy Steve Witkoff, currently in Israel, will soon head to Moscow to continue talks with the Russian leadership.
Witkoff had previously held intensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital.
Trump's statements came hours after a bloody Russian attack targeted the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Wednesday night _ Thursday, where the missile strikes and drone attacks killed at least 16 people, including two children, and injured 155 others, including 16 children, according to Ukrainian emergency services.
The attacks resulted in the destruction of a 9-story residential building in the western neighborhoods of the capital, amid the escalating Russian airstrikes in recent months, despite continuous American and international pressure to stop the war that has been going on for more than 3 and a half years.
In an escalatory step, Trump gave his Russian counterpart until August 8 to reach an agreement to cease fire in Ukraine, threatening to impose strict economic sanctions if progress is not made on this front.
It is worth mentioning that the Kremlin has not ruled out the possibility of a meeting between Putin and Trump, but indicated that achieving this is subject to certain conditions.
