The administration of the US President Donald Trump is planning to take a new and tough step towards immigration by intending to reject asylum requests for hundreds of thousands of potential immigrants inside the United States, making them vulnerable to immediate deportation.
Sources familiar with the matter reported that this step is part of an extensive campaign led by Trump to curb illegal immigration.
According to CNN, federal authorities are seeking to expand the list of individuals eligible for deportation, targeting especially those who entered the country illegally and then applied for asylum, with their cases expected to be closed, exposing them to direct deportation.
Federal data indicates that around 25% of asylum seekers who applied to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in the past decade entered the country illegally, estimated to be around a quarter of a million people.
On the other hand, the rest entered legally through various ports using diverse visas.
US law grants individuals who are subjected to violence or persecution in their home countries the right to apply for asylum to stay in the United States.
However, since taking office, Trump has implemented strict measures to close these ports, especially at the southern borders of the country.
Current federal data shows that there are around 1.45 million "positive" asylum applications still pending.
Alternatively, individuals not subject to deportation procedures can apply for positive asylum through the USCIS.
These measures come amid increasing pressure on federal authorities to achieve record numbers in detaining illegal immigrants, amidst a growing influx across the Mexican borders.
