In a recent interview with ABC News, former U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the situation in Ukraine and his future plans, confirming that Russian President Vladimir Putin initially sought to gain full control over Ukraine. Trump stated, "Putin's real dream was to control the entire country, but I believe that thanks to my presence, he did not achieve this goal." Trump added that he believes Putin is actually seeking peace, explaining that the war was initially to expand Russian influence, but he considers his stance played a role in curbing these ambitions. Regarding trust in international relations, Trump responded to a question about his trust in Putin, saying, "I don't trust anyone 100%." These statements come at a sensitive time, as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for both Russia and Ukraine to present "concrete proposals" to end the conflict, warning that the United States may step back from its role as a mediator in negotiations if no tangible progress is made. At the same time, Russia announced a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10, coinciding with Moscow's celebrations of Victory Day in World War II. On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his country will not make any concessions regarding the occupied territories, cautioning that giving away any part of the land as a "gift" will only lead to further tensions. While the U.S. administration has shown willingness to recognize Russia's sovereignty over the Crimean Peninsula and some other areas occupied by Moscow since the start of the conflict in February 2022, reflecting the new directions of the Trump administration seeking to end the war as soon as possible. Despite these shifts in positions, the issue remains complex for Ukraine, which refuses to relinquish its territories, adding an additional layer of complexity to the negotiations.
