In a new escalation in the Ukrainian crisis, US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, accusing him of not offering any initiative to stop the ongoing war in Ukraine and threatening the possibility of imposing severe American sanctions on Moscow in the near future.
During statements to reporters from the White House last Tuesday evening, Trump said: "Putin has not done anything so far to stop the war, and the United States is seriously considering imposing additional sanctions".
He added: "The situation is not good with him. Putin has killed a lot of people".
In what appeared to be a clear expression of his frustration with the Russian leader, Trump continued, saying: "We receive a lot of nonsense from him. He is very nice all the time, but his words are meaningless in the end".
* Increased Military Support for Ukraine
The US President confirmed that his country has provided Kiev with the best military equipment to confront Russia, indicating that the support will not stop, but will soon be enhanced.
Trump said: "We will have to send more weapons - primarily defensive weapons", during a press conference he held with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
He added: "The Ukrainians are facing very strong strikes, and we continue to support them".
* "Disturbing" Call with Putin
In earlier statements last Friday, Trump described his recent phone call with Putin as "very disturbing", confirming that his Russian counterpart "only wants to continue killing people".
The US President said from aboard his presidential plane: "I feel very frustrated by the call. It's a very difficult situation. Putin wants to continue until the end, and this is completely unacceptable".
Trump pointed out that he discussed the issue of sanctions with the Russian President during the call, confirming that Putin is concerned about these sanctions and realizes that their implementation may be imminent.
* Direct Communication Between the Leaders
It is worth mentioning that Trump has had five phone calls with Putin since returning to the White House in January 2025, in a diplomatic attempt to end the war as soon as possible, but his efforts have not yielded tangible results so far.
