U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Wednesday, that his envoy Steve Witkoff held a fruitful meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social" that "significant progress has been made," noting that he briefed some European allies on the content of the meeting.
He added that "everyone agrees that this war must end, and we will work to achieve that in the coming days and weeks."
Earlier today, the Kremlin revealed that Putin held "constructive" talks with Witkoff in Moscow, during which they discussed the conflict in Ukraine, following a 3-hour meeting.
Russian President's advisor Yuri Ushakov told reporters that "very useful and constructive talks took place" with Witkoff.
Ushakov added that Ukraine and Russian-American strategic cooperation were discussed.
The talks came ahead of the August 8 deadline set by Trump for Russia to halt its military operation in Ukraine or face new sanctions.
