An appalling traffic accident occurred on the regional road in the city of Ashmun, affiliated with the Menoufia Governorate north of Cairo, resulting in the death of 19 people and injuring several other passengers, some of them in critical condition, due to a violent collision between a truck and a passenger bus.
The authorities received an immediate report of the accident, and ambulances quickly headed to the scene, where the victims' bodies were recovered from the wreckage, and the injured were transported to hospitals in Bajour, Quesna, Shabin Al-Kom Educational, and Ashmun General for necessary treatment.
Preliminary examination revealed that speeding and steering wheel malfunction were the main causes of the accident.
Authorities have started to clear the collision debris from the road to reopen it to traffic.
The Public Prosecution has initiated an investigation to determine the details of the accident and assign responsibilities, as calls are renewed to tighten control on highways and reduce reckless driving that frequently claims lives.
