An appalling incident took place yesterday morning at Orio al Serio Airport in northern Italy, where a ground services worker tragically lost his life after being sucked into an airplane engine while it was preparing for takeoff.
According to an official statement from the airport management, all flights were temporarily suspended from 10:20 AM to 12:00 PM local time (08:20 - 10:00 GMT) due to what was described as a "problem with the aircraft movement area." Authorities have confirmed that an urgent investigation into the incident is underway.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the victim, a baggage handling worker, died after being pulled into the engine of an A320 aircraft belonging to ITA Airways while it was getting ready to take off from the runway.
Corriere della Sera newspaper quoted airport officials saying that the man appeared to have been running on the runway at a wrong moment, becoming a victim of the tragic accident.
An airport spokesperson confirmed the fatality, clarifying that the man was not a passenger.
It is worth mentioning that Bergamo Airport is a key hub for budget airline flights to and from Milan, serving thousands of passengers daily.
Several international media outlets have covered the incident, with some reports describing it as one of the worst accidents that could happen in highly regulated airport environments.
Investigations are still ongoing to uncover the details of the incident, causing shock among the victim's colleagues and the passengers who were about to depart.
