US President Donald Trump announced yesterday, Friday, the start of anticipated talks with China next Monday or Tuesday, with the aim of reaching a potential deal regarding TikTok.
Trump said in remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One: "I think we're going to start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday, maybe with President Xi Jinping or one of his representatives, and we expect to almost have a deal".
He added that the United States is about to end an agreement to sell the popular short video app.
This announcement comes after Trump extended the deadline for the Chinese company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, to sell the app's operations in the United States until September 17.
The proposed deal involves separating TikTok's US operations into a new company, majority-owned and managed by American investors.
However, the deal was previously suspended after China announced its rejection in response to Washington imposing high tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump pointed out the necessity of obtaining Chinese approval for the deal, saying: "I'm not 100% confident, but we have a great relationship with President Xi, and I think this deal will be beneficial for both parties".
It is worth noting that the potential buyers of TikTok are the same consortium that made a previous offer but stumbled, and Trump intends to reveal them in the next two weeks.
