The official spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, announced that the status of the Syrian Arab Republic within the international organization will not undergo any changes, confirming its full membership in the United Nations, despite the recent U.S. decision to reduce the legal status of the Syrian mission in New York. Dujarric emphasized that "the membership of states in the United Nations is governed by international law, while recognition of governments is a sovereign decision of member states and not the international organization." He also pointed out that "the adjustments made by the United States, as the host country, to the visas of members of the Syrian mission will not affect Syria's status in the United Nations, and their delegation will continue to participate in the organization's activities as long as their mission is officially accredited and authorized to carry out its duties." This comes after Washington officially directed a memorandum to the Syrian mission in New York through UN channels, announcing a change in the classification of the mission from "representing a member state" to "representing an unrecognized government" by the United States. The decision included canceling the G1 visas allocated to mission members, usually granted to diplomats recognized by their governments, and replacing them with G3 visas designated for entities not recognized by Washington. In an internal message to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Damascus, the Syrian mission mentioned that the U.S. memorandum "clearly indicates the U.S. administration's non-recognition of the current Syrian transitional government," expressing concerns that this move may encourage other countries to take similar actions. In an official response, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied that the change in the status of its diplomatic mission in the United States is related to any political considerations, affirming that it is purely a technical and administrative measure that does not reflect a change in the international position on the legitimacy of the Syrian government. A source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry revealed that the ministry is closely monitoring the issue with relevant authorities in Washington and the United Nations, aiming to clarify any legal or political misunderstandings, emphasizing Syria's commitment to protecting its interests and defending its legitimate representation in international forums. The source also disclosed that the ministry has initiated a comprehensive review of its diplomatic missions worldwide, in preparation for issuing regulatory decisions aimed at enhancing its efficiency and keeping pace with current political developments, ensuring a clear diplomatic and political presence that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people.
