Yesterday, Sunday, June 29, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shar'a received the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, in the capital Damascus, as part of the UN efforts to push the political process in the country.
The Syrian presidency announced through its official social media pages that the meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Shibani. The two parties discussed the latest developments in the Syrian file, national dialogue pathways, and ways to enhance cooperation with the United Nations.
Pedersen's visit comes in the context of his ongoing movements since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024, which included multiple meetings with figures from the new Syrian leadership and representatives of the Syrian civil society, in an attempt to push forward the political settlement process and achieve sustainable stability in the country.
It is worth mentioning that Pedersen has made several visits to Damascus in recent months as part of his efforts to activate negotiation pathways and push towards a comprehensive political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
