In a surprising move that sparked tension within the US administration, informed sources revealed that US President Donald Trump expressed strong anger over the announcement by the Pentagon to halt shipments of defensive weapons to Ukraine without prior coordination with the White House.
According to three sources cited by the Associated Press, Trump was frustrated by the unilateral decision made by the Pentagon last week, which included stopping the delivery of air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery, and other weapons previously pledged by Washington to Kyiv, justifying the decision due to concerns about decreasing US inventories.
As two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned, the decision did not receive unanimous support within the Pentagon and faced opposition from some military leaders.
They also noted that Pentagon policy director Elbridge Colby coordinated this step before announcing it, surprising Trump who was not previously informed about it.
In his first reaction, the US President announced on Monday that more defensive weapons would be sent to Ukraine, expressing his displeasure with the way the Pentagon handled the issue.
From the White House, he said: "We will have to send more weapons _ primarily defensive weapons," indicating that Ukrainians are "facing very strong strikes."
In a notable escalation against Moscow, Trump launched a sharp attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin, criticizing the Kremlin's failure to reach a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
During his statements, he hinted at the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia, saying: "I am looking at it strongly ... the situation is not good with Putin ... the Russian President has killed a lot of people."
This stance comes amid increasing tensions within the US administration regarding the future of military support for Ukraine, while the Kremlin described American positions related to arming Kyiv as contradictory.
The sudden decision by the Pentagon highlights internal disagreements regarding the US strategy in Ukraine, as Trump continues to strengthen his supportive stance towards Kyiv, alongside intensifying his rhetoric towards Moscow.
Pressure on the Department of Defense is expected to increase as Trump closely monitors this issue, especially with his commitment to reviewing defense policies and ensuring that the White House is not excluded from critical decisions.
