The Libyan National Army announced last night, Tuesday, the seizure of large and diverse quantities of weapons and ammunition, buried in secret warehouses under a house in the city of Sabha, south of the country.
This security operation, carried out by special forces in coordination with the Southern Reorganization Committee, is the largest of its kind in the region in years.
The operation targeted a residential neighborhood in Sabha, where suspicious activity was observed inside a house being used as a weapons storage facility.
Several individuals suspected of belonging to terrorist groups, who were using the location to store weapons, were apprehended.
The seized weapons included various shells, hand grenades, explosive devices, medium and heavy ammunition, as well as anti-aircraft guns, indicating the presence of a comprehensive arsenal prepared for potential use in violent acts or smuggling.
This development is part of ongoing efforts by the Libyan National Army for months to enhance security and enforce order in the south, amidst increasing activities of unlawful groups and escalating smuggling, especially from conflict-affected border areas like Sudan.
This operation highlights the security risks facing southern Libya, amid warnings that continued flow of arms to this region may fuel local conflicts, support terrorist groups, and sustain organized smuggling networks.
