In a precise and surprise security operation, Syrian internal security forces carried out a raid targeting a cell belonging to ISIS in the town of Atmeh in the northern Idlib province, following intelligence information confirming the presence of organization members inside one of the houses.
According to sources, the security force surrounded a house located near the electricity company street in the town, and the operation was executed late at night on Tuesday/Wednesday, in full coordination with the International Coalition's air support.
The skies over the area witnessed intensive flights of helicopters belonging to the coalition, while a precise air drop was executed, leading to intermittent clashes on the ground, resulting in the death of an armed individual believed to belong to ISIS.
* Background of the Attack on St. Elias Church in Damascus
This operation comes about two months after the terrorist attack that targeted St. Elias Church in the Douala area of the capital Damascus in June, which resulted in the death of about 25 people, after two gunmen stormed the place and opened fire on worshippers in a bloody manner.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior revealed at the time that the attackers had come from the al-Hol camp in the northeast of the country, passing through the Syrian desert, confirming their affiliation with the terrorist organization ISIS.
* ISIS Decline but the Threat Continues
Despite the significant decline of ISIS since the collapse of the "Caliphate" it declared in 2014, and its control over vast areas of Syria and Iraq, the threat from the organization remains through small cells spread in remote areas of the Syrian desert and some limited pockets in Iraq.
The security operation in Atmeh confirms that security coordination between Damascus and the International Coalition continues to pursue the remnants of the organization, preventing them from regrouping or carrying out new attacks that threaten civilians.
