The European Union welcomed today, Monday, the formation of the National Commission for Transitional Justice and the National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria, considering it an important step towards comprehensive justice and truth deserved by the Syrian people. The Union stated on its website today: "Transitional justice efforts are essential to establish the foundations of reconciliation and lasting peace in Syria, and investigating the fate of all missing persons will be a decisive step in turning the page on the past." The Union called on the Syrian authorities to ensure the implementation of these efforts in a transparent, fair, and comprehensive manner, in line with international standards of justice, involving relevant international bodies, Syrian and international civil society organizations fully in these efforts. The statement emphasized the European Union's continued support for the Syrian people in their journey towards peace, stability, and justice.
