Amid escalating military tensions between Israel and Iran, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has called for a video conference of EU foreign ministers on Tuesday to discuss the dangerous situation in the Middle East. This meeting follows Israeli attacks on Iran and Iranian retaliations, aiming to coordinate European positions and ways to deal with the crisis. The EU spokesperson confirmed that the meeting aims to exchange views and coordinate diplomatic communication with Tel Aviv and Tehran, as well as discuss possible future steps. In the same context, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed her contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirming the EU's commitment to peace, stability, and de-escalation efforts in the region. She emphasized Europe's strong opposition to Iran possessing nuclear weapons, stressing the importance of reaching solutions through negotiations. On the ground, Israeli broadcasting reported that Israel officially requested European countries' assistance in defense and intercepting Iranian missiles, in a move to reestablish an international alliance that previously cooperated against Iranian attacks in 2024. In this regard, Britain agreed to participate in defense activities, while France expressed readiness to act soon, according to official sources. The escalating events raise international concerns about the future stability in the Middle East, amidst renewed calls for de-escalation and restraint from all parties.
