The European Union announced today the activation of the Copernicus system to support efforts in combating the wildfires raging in the countryside of Latakia.
Copernicus, which is part of the European Union, utilizes a variety of satellites to process data related to disasters, climate change, agriculture, and more, collecting and analyzing them to create useful and reliable information.
European Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, stated in a tweet on the platform “Twitter”: “The wildfires in Syria have led to the displacement of thousands of people and caused significant damage to vital services and rural communities, amidst difficult humanitarian conditions,” adding: “The European Union has activated the Copernicus service to support local response efforts through satellite images.”
Syria's Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, revealed yesterday that contact had been made with the European Union, requesting their support in extinguishing the fires in the countryside of Latakia. Acting Head of the European Union Delegation to Syria, Mikael Onemakht, confirmed the Union's readiness to support the efforts in this context.
