The city of Austin in Texas witnessed a tragic shooting incident on Monday evening, August 11, when an unknown assailant opened fire in the parking lot of a Target store, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to others.
The local police confirmed the arrest of the suspect after he fled the scene, having stolen one car and caused a crash before taking another vehicle.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated at a press conference: "This is a very sad day for Austin, and a sad day for all of us. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims."
She added that the incident resulted in the death of an adult and a child at the shooting site, while another adult died after being transported to the hospital.
A spokesperson for the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services indicated that assistance was provided to a fourth person who suffered a minor health issue unrelated to the incident's injuries.
No information has yet been released by authorities regarding the identities of the victims, amidst an atmosphere of grief and shock in the city, especially since the incident occurred during the back-to-school shopping season, raising concerns about the safety of public places.
This incident comes less than three weeks after another attack at a Walmart store in Michigan, where a man stabbed 11 people on July 26, and was charged with terrorism and multiple counts of attempted murder, highlighting the rise of violence in shopping locations across the United States.
