Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of trying to mislead the United States, ahead of an anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Zelensky said in his daily video address on Sunday evening: "We understand Russia's intention to try to deceive America. We will not allow this."
He expressed his appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump's determination to end the war, but emphasized at the same time that the only reason for the continued killing in Ukraine is Putin's desire to wage war and "manipulate everyone he communicates with."
Zelensky confirmed his rejection of any peace agreement that involves concessions of territory, stating: "We will definitely defend our country and our independence," adding: "There is clear support for the principle that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine's participation."
* Special European Conference
For her part, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, announced last night, Sunday, the holding of a special video conference with EU foreign ministers ahead of the upcoming U.S.-Russian talks.
Kallas stated in a statement that she intends to discuss the next steps on Monday, given that "Europe's core interests are at stake."
She added: "Any agreement between the United States and Russia must include Ukraine and the European Union, as it is a matter of security for Ukraine and all of Europe."
She emphasized that Russia's aggression should not be rewarded, stressing that "the territories temporarily occupied by Russia belong to Ukraine."
Kallas also urged the United States to use its influence to push Russia towards serious negotiations, warning that "Moscow will not stop its aggression until it feels it cannot continue."
* Washington's Position
For his part, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said on Sunday that he does not rule out inviting Zelensky to the U.S.-Russian talks, adding that "President Trump is the one who will make the decision," according to CNN.
Presidents Trump and Putin are set to meet next Friday in Alaska to discuss a potential solution to the war in Ukraine after more than three years of conflict, while Zelensky has not yet been invited to attend the meeting.
