The Syrian Ministry of Health announces free cataract surgeries in May 2025.
The Syrian Ministry of Health has launched a free medical campaign to treat cataracts, as part of ongoing efforts to provide healthcare services to those most in need, with support and collaboration from Arab and international medical organizations and institutions. The campaign aims to provide diagnosis and free surgical treatment for patients in the governorates of Damascus and Aleppo, with surgeries scheduled at specific hospitals during the current month of May. According to the ministry's statement, the campaign starts in the capital Damascus at Damascus Hospital (Al-Mujtahed) from May 18 to 23, then moves to Mohammed Wasim Maarrar Hospital in the city of Azaz in Aleppo governorate, continuing between May 25 and 30. Examinations and surgeries are conducted by appointment for registered patients who have been officially invited by the campaign's organizing team. This initiative is carried out in cooperation with the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Aid, the International Vision Foundation, and the Independent Doctors Organization, reflecting broad coordination among medical and humanitarian entities aiming to improve the healthcare situation in Syria. The ministry emphasized that those wishing to benefit from the campaign should register through a dedicated online platform, with appointments carefully organized to ensure the best possible service within the available resources. This campaign comes at a time when the country is facing accumulating health challenges, making these free initiatives essential to alleviate the burden on the most vulnerable patients, especially given the difficult economic conditions affecting many citizens.
