In the presence of President Ahmed Al-Shar'a and the US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak, the People's Palace in Damascus witnessed the signing of a historic memorandum of understanding between the Syrian Ministry of Energy and an international alliance led by the global UCC Group, along with several major international energy companies, aiming to enhance investment in the energy sector with a value of up to 7 billion dollars, marking Syria's largest investment agreement in this sector to date. During the signing ceremony, Syrian Energy Minister Engineer Mohammed Al-Bashir emphasized that this agreement represents a pivotal moment and a real turning point in the history of the electricity and energy sector in Syria, seeking to rehabilitate the significantly damaged infrastructure over the years through major projects utilizing the latest American and European technologies. The agreement includes: * Establishing four power stations using Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology in the areas of Deir ez-Zor, Maharda, Zizoun in the countryside of Hama, and Trewaoy in the countryside of Homs, with a total production capacity of 4000 megawatts. * Building a 1000-megawatt solar power station in the Wadiyan Al-Rabi region in southern Syria. Thus, the project will provide 5000 megawatts of electricity, leading to: - Increased hours of power supply - Improved living standards for citizens - Stimulating economic development - Launching clean and renewable energy projects Minister Al-Bashir noted that this agreement opens the door to broader regional and international cooperation, enhancing Syria's position as a significant energy hub in the region. The CEO of the Orbacon Holding Group, Ramzi Al-Khayyat, explained that the project will contribute to achieving Syria's energy self-sufficiency, representing a real start to comprehensive reconstruction. He pointed out that the project will provide 50,000 direct job opportunities and 250,000 indirect job opportunities, boosting the Syrian labor market and alleviating the living burdens on citizens. Al-Khayyat expressed gratitude to President Ahmed Al-Shar'a, Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and US President Donald Trump for their roles in providing the appropriate international and political conditions to accomplish this agreement. On his part, US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barak affirmed that the United States is putting all its efforts to support the new Syrian government, announcing President Trump's decision issued on May 13 to lift US sanctions on Syria, describing it as a "bold decision." Barak expressed optimism about Syria's future, calling it the "cradle of civilizations," and confirming that the US administration is working to support its stability. The agreement was also signed with companies: - Orbacon - Power International - Genkiz Energy - Calyon Energy All of which will participate in implementing the massive project as part of the plan to rebuild the energy sector in Syria. This event marks a new milestone in Syria's economic recovery journey and sends a clear message of the country's return to the international investment map, as Damascus looks forward to further openness and cooperation with regional and international partners.
