A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale struck yesterday, Saturday, the area off the southwestern coast of Guatemala, causing concern among residents without immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 100 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Champerico, at a depth estimated to be only 9 kilometers below the surface, making it one of the shallow earthquakes felt over wide areas.
Many residents reported feeling the tremors on social media in Guatemala City and other parts of the country.
The impact of the earthquake was also felt by residents in parts of southern Mexico.
It is worth mentioning that Guatemala is located in a high seismic activity zone, sitting atop a major tectonic fault that forms the boundary between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates, making earthquakes a recurring natural phenomenon in the country.
Despite the strength of the earthquake, local and international authorities have not yet issued any tsunami warnings, and monitoring teams are closely following the situation.
