"A step in line with the constitutional declaration" .. Pedersen praises the decree forming the Higher Committee for People's Council elections.

The United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, praised today the decree issued by the Syrian President Ahmed al-Shar'a, forming the Higher Committee for the People's Council elections.
Pedersen described the decree in a post on the "X" platform as an important step in line with the constitutional declaration that calls for the establishment of a new People's Council as the transitional legislative authority, with two-thirds of its members to be directly elected.
He hinted at encouraging the Higher Elections Committee to make essential efforts towards "inclusivity, transparency," and openness in the process of establishing the People's Council to ensure its foundation as a basis for political consensus.
According to the post, "Pedersen also encourages measures to enable the active participation and representation of women in this process."
Pedersen expressed his anticipation to engage with Syrians from all walks of life, to hear their perspectives on these developments and their broader aspirations regarding the political process.
Two days ago, President al-Shar'a issued Presidential Decree No. 66 of 2025, forming a committee named the "Higher Committee for the People's Council Elections," tasked with supervising the formation of sub-electoral bodies, where these bodies will elect two-thirds of the People's Council members.
