Data from a source in the oil sector and data from the London Stock Exchange group revealed that Russia has increased its oil supplies from the Arctic to Syria, which needs crude oil to operate its refineries.
For a long time, Russia has considered Syria a key gateway for its commercial and military operations in the Middle East and Africa.
Russia has two bases in western Syria, a naval base in Tartus, and the Hmeimim airbase near the coastal city of Latakia. Russian influence in the country suffered a blow after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December, but the Kremlin stated in January that Moscow is in talks with the new Syrian administration to maintain these bases.
According to the source and the London Stock Exchange group, the oil tanker "Mitzal," which is under U.S. sanctions, was loaded with around 140,000 tons of Russian oil at the Murmansk port in the Arctic and is heading to the Syrian port of Baniyas, which has already received several shipments of this oil.
Data from the London Stock Exchange group and traders showed that the tankers Sycamore and Aquatica shipped oil from Russia to Syria in March, followed by the tanker Sabina in April.
The total Russian oil supplies received by Syria have reached around 350,000 tons, approximately 2.6 million barrels, since the beginning of the year.
