A suspect was killed and a police officer was injured in a shooting incident that occurred yesterday, Friday, on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, after reports of an active shooter in the area.
The American police announced that they responded immediately to the emergency call, where the shooting took place near the entrance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federal agency concerned with public health, located next to the university campus.
Employees at the centers confirmed that bullets struck the windows of several agency buildings, leading to a state of maximum alert in the area, while police patrols continued to sound alarms as reinforcements from various security agencies in Atlanta arrived.
For its part, Emory University issued a warning through its official website and social media platforms, urging students and staff on campus to take shelter immediately, stating in the warning: "Run, Hide, Fight".
Later, the university announced the lifting of the shelter order but urged everyone to avoid the area until further notice.
American NBC reported that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) took over the investigation into the incident to determine the background and motives of the suspect, whose identity has not yet been revealed.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr commented, saying:
"We are deeply shocked by the news coming from Emory University, and we pray for the safety of all members of the university community".
The incident has brought back to the forefront the ongoing debate in the United States about gun violence within educational institutions and its implications for community safety.
Investigations are still ongoing to uncover more details about the suspect's identity and possible motives.
