In a new step indicating an expansion of air openness towards Syria, the Saudi low-cost airline "Flynas" announced its intention to resume flights to the capital Damascus starting from next July, joining a list of foreign airlines that have begun returning to Syrian airspace after the easing of Western sanctions. The announcement was made by Steven Greenway, the company's CEO, during a press conference held in the Philippine capital Manila, where he stated: "We obtained approvals last week to operate flights to Syria, and we are now preparing to start operations in the upcoming July." Greenway also mentioned signing a deal to lease two aircraft from the Philippine low-cost airline Cebu Pacific to support the expected expansion operations, including operating the new route to Damascus. This move comes amidst successive international decisions to ease American and European sanctions on Syria, opening the door for airlines to resume direct flights to the country. The Emirati airline "Flydubai" had preceded "Flynas" in this path, announcing the resumption of direct flights to Damascus starting from the first of June. The step taken by "Flynas" may mark a new economic and touristic turning point for Syria, with expectations of a gradual return of air navigation and commercial activity through Syrian airspace.
