Russia has called for "calm" and an end to the "bloodshed" in Syria, where clashes are taking place in the coastal region in the west of the country between security forces and armed remnants of the regime, resulting in the deaths of dozens since Thursday.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated: "We call on Syrian leaders who can influence the situation on the ground to make every effort to put an end to the bloodshed as soon as possible."
She also confirmed her country's readiness "to coordinate closely with foreign partners to calm the situation."
Zakharova expressed Moscow's concern about the sharp deterioration in the security situation in Syria and called on all "respected" leaders in the country to try to stop the bloodshed as soon as possible.
She continued: "We reaffirm our principled position in supporting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic." She added, "We look forward to all influential countries in the situation in Syria contributing to its stability."
The provinces of Tartus and Latakia have been witnessing intense battles since the early hours of the morning, with the Ministry of Defense forces advancing towards the city of Jableh after intensifying artillery and missile shelling on the positions of the remnants of the ousted regime.
Yesterday, Thursday, clashes resulted in more than 70 deaths, including at least 35 from the Ministries of Defense and Interior, and 32 from the armed elements loyal to the defunct regime.
