Reuters reported today, Friday, that foreign fighters who joined the Syrian opposition during the war have applied for Syrian citizenship after supporting the opposition in overthrowing the Assad regime.
It added that the application was submitted by former American representative Bilal Abdul Kareem, and includes thousands of foreigners from more than 10 countries, including Egyptians, Saudis, British, Germans, French, Uyghurs, and Chechens.
According to the agency, the aim of granting citizenship is to enable them to settle, own land, and travel freely.
It noted that the Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed that the final decision rests with the presidency, and no official statement has yet been issued regarding granting citizenship to foreign fighters.
