Syrian actor Duraid Lahham returned to the capital Damascus for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, in a visit documented by a widely circulated video on social media. The video showed Lahham's arrival at Damascus International Airport with his wife, without any signs of reception or welcome.
The video depicted actor Duraid Lahham, known for his supportive stance towards the ousted regime in recent years, in a state of confusion upon his arrival at the airport, while the hall lacked any signs of welcome or warmth, unlike what happened with other artists known for their supportive stance towards the Syrian revolution against the former regime.
The video sparked widespread controversy on social media due to the lack of popular interest in Lahham and his wife's arrival, in a scene that conveyed feelings of confusion on their part.
Many users pointed out that what happened was natural and a result of Lahham's previous political stances and his declared support for the Assad regime since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime and his escape to Russia, Duraid Lahham appeared in a recorded video posted on his official YouTube channel, where he congratulated what he described as the "birth of the new Syria," a statement that drew wide criticism from activists who saw it as a blatant attempt to amend his previous stance after years of absolute support for the ousted regime.
In the video, Lahham said: "Congratulations to my homeland Syria on its new birth, and in order to continue celebrating this occasion every year, we must remain united across all our political factions and affiliations, with our only faction being Syria, and we should sing as we used to sing, me and the children, 'My homeland.. my homeland,' this is the only statement issued by me on this occasion."
It is worth mentioning that Lahham has been one of the prominent artistic voices supporting the ousted Assad regime and Iran in recent years, and he has previously sparked controversy by sending direct messages to the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, saying: "In your holy spirit, in your hopeful eyes, in your working hands, and in your words lies a command that is fulfilled."
