Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdulsalam Hakeel, discussed with the Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Sami Samirat, during a bilateral meeting via the "Zoom" video communication technology; the aspects of mutual cooperation in the fields of communications and information technology. The meeting focused on areas of mutual cooperation to activate submarine cable pathways across the Mediterranean Sea to serve both countries, provide alternative routes for communication and internet networks, and the possibility of making Jordan a crucial internet hub by extending cables with a capacity of up to 100 terabits and connecting them to Jordanian fiber optic networks to provide alternative routes supporting service sustainability. Both sides expressed their aspirations for Jordan to become a strategic transit point for communication and internet traffic through Syria towards the Arabian Gulf, and agreed to hold a Syrian-Jordanian technical forum for companies operating in the fields of communications and information technology, to be hosted in the capital, Damascus, at the earliest opportunity, to explore direct cooperation opportunities between the private sectors of both countries. The official SANA agency reported that the Jordanian side confirmed its commitment to harness all resources to support the communications and information technology sector in Syria, and to allow Jordanian companies to contribute to technical and investment projects in this vital sector. Both parties agreed to continue coordination and enhance cooperation channels between the two ministries within the framework of the Higher Coordination Council, for which a memorandum of understanding was signed and activated on May 20th in Damascus.
