The Lebanese government has declared an official mourning on Monday, August 4th, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the explosion of the Beirut port.

The Council of Ministers said in a memorandum: "Based on Decree No. 15215 dated 27/9/2005 and its amendments, especially Decree No. 8007 dated 23/7/2021, national mourning is declared on Monday, August 4, 2025, in memory of the Beirut port explosion. Flags will be flown at half-mast at public administrations, institutions, and municipalities. Regular programs on radio and television stations will be adjusted to suit the painful anniversary and in solidarity with the families of the martyrs, the wounded, and their families".

It is worth mentioning that the Beirut port explosion that occurred in Lebanon on August 4, 2020, is classified as one of the top 10 most powerful explosions in the world. It resulted in about 200 deaths and around 6000 injuries, and it destroyed half of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Prior to the explosion, Lebanon was experiencing a severe economic crisis, as the government had defaulted on its debts, the Lebanese pound exchange rate had dropped, and the poverty rate had risen to over 50%.
