A White House official revealed that US President Donald Trump is still open to communicating with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in an effort to completely halt North Korea's nuclear program.
This American stance comes after North Korea announced earlier today that the United States must accept the reality that has changed since the last summit meetings between the two countries, emphasizing that any future dialogue will not lead to the cessation of its nuclear program.
In a notable statement, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader and a close associate, stated that the personal relationship between Kim and Trump "is not bad," but she considered any attempt to exploit this relationship to end her country's nuclear program as "ridicule."
She added that North Korea's nuclear capabilities and its geopolitical environment have changed drastically since the three meetings that brought the two leaders together during Trump's first term.
Kim Yo Jong emphasized that any attempt to deny North Korea's status as a nuclear state is completely rejected, saying that if Washington does not accept this new reality, then meetings between the two countries will remain a one-sided hope.
During his second term, Trump expressed his desire to resume diplomatic relations with North Korea. However, high-level talks held in 2018 and 2019 collapsed due to disagreements over the US sanctions imposed on Pyongyang. Since then, North Korea has continued its military experiments, seeking to modernize and expand its nuclear arsenal.
Kim Yo Jong, who holds a prominent position in the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party, oversees relations with South Korea and the United States. Many analysts in South Korea believe she is the second most powerful figure in the country after her brother Kim Jong Un.
