New Jordanian-Syrian Agreement to Regulate the Sharing of Yarmouk River Water

The Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority, Hisham Al-Haisa, announced today, Monday, the reaching of new water agreements between Amman and Damascus aimed at organizing resource management in the Yarmouk River basin, ensuring a more equitable distribution of shared water.
Al-Haisa explained during a meeting of the Agriculture and Water Committee that recent meetings have reactivated the joint technical committee for the basin, where challenges of random resource depletion and the issue of illegal wells were discussed, noting that a Syrian government decree has been issued to stop these violations.
He added that Jordan has provided a comprehensive study to assess the basin from both the Jordanian and Syrian sides, aiming for a more balanced and sustainable management. He also pointed out that the two countries agreed to resort to artificial rain technology to enhance water reserves, along with a plan to train Syrian engineers in dam management and electronic water distribution.
Al-Haisa confirmed that these steps represent a new beginning for water cooperation between Jordan and Syria and form a practical framework for protecting shared natural resources and ensuring their sustainability.
