Mandela Mandela, one of the grandsons of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela, announced on Friday his intention to join the humanitarian aid fleet heading to Gaza, where he will board a ship departing from Tunisia as part of the "Global Resilience Fleet" aimed at breaking the blockade imposed on the region.
Mandela said during a press conference in Tunisia: "We, as a delegation from South Africa, have chosen to join the fleet from here, to affirm from an African perspective that our continent is part of this struggle. We Africans know well what it means to live under occupation and oppression."
The Maghreb section of the fleet is scheduled to set sail on Sunday after its departure was postponed due to bad weather, to join other ships that have departed from Spain and Italy.
According to the organizers, about a hundred participants have registered from Tunisia to join the journey.
The fleet is expected to arrive in Gaza in mid-September, after Israel thwarted two previous attempts by activists in June and July to deliver aid by sea.
The initiative includes activists from dozens of countries, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, actors Liam Cunningham from Ireland and Edward Fernandez from Spain, as well as European MPs and public figures like Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona.
