Shocking scenes have shaken public opinion after a video clip circulated documenting the moment the upper floor of the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, was targeted in an Israeli airstrike that resulted in dozens of casualties, including journalists and paramedics.
The live footage showed the last moments of journalists Mohamed Salama, Muath Abu Taha, and Mariam Abu Daqa while they were covering the aftermath of the first strike on the complex, before they were directly targeted. Photographer Jamal Badah from Palestine Today was also severely injured.
According to medical sources in Gaza, the airstrike resulted in 19 fatalities, including four journalists, in addition to injuries to others from the ambulance and civil defense teams who were working to retrieve the victims from inside the hospital.
For his part, the director of the Medical Relief Association in Gaza confirmed that "there are no safe areas in the strip," pointing out that targeting hospitals has become a deliberate policy aimed at crippling the ability of health centers to perform their humanitarian duties.
While rescue teams continue their efforts amid harsh humanitarian conditions, health and humanitarian organizations have called on the international community for urgent intervention to protect civilians and journalists and to stop the systematic assaults on medical facilities.
