The Kingdom of Morocco officially announced the reopening of its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, after a 13-year closure, in implementation of the royal directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in a new diplomatic step reflecting Rabat's determination to strengthen its bilateral relations with Syria.
All the services of the Moroccan embassy have resumed full operations with all its administrative and technical staff at its previous location in Damascus, while the necessary administrative procedures and renovation work are being completed to transfer the embassy to a new building that aligns with the renewed dynamics of Moroccan-Syrian relations.
This decision comes as a culmination of what King Mohammed VI announced during the 34th Arab League Summit held in Baghdad on May 17, 2025, where His Majesty revealed the kingdom's intention to reopen its embassy in Syria, which had been closed in 2012.
The King emphasized that this initiative would "open broader horizons for the historical bilateral relations between our two countries and peoples."
Furthermore, in a congratulatory message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, King Mohammed VI reiterated Morocco's consistent support for the Syrian people's aspirations for freedom, security, and stability, while emphasizing the importance of preserving Syria's territorial unity and national sovereignty.
In the same context, the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Mr. Asaad al-Shaaban, expressed his country's gratitude to King Mohammed VI, considering this step as a positive shift in the relationship between the two countries, reflecting a sincere desire to rebuild bridges of Arab cooperation and solidarity.
A technical delegation from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad visited Damascus on May 28, 2025, to finalize the practical and technical arrangements for the embassy's reopening and ensure its readiness to operate according to the required standards.
With this decision, Moroccan-Syrian relations come to the forefront amidst rapid regional and international developments, and a growing trend in Arab efforts to normalize relations with Syria after years of estrangement.
