The Wall Street Journal revealed that US Attorney General Pam Bondi informed President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House in May that his name appeared in the Justice Department files related to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019.
According to the newspaper, the briefing received by Trump was part of a routine meeting discussing several files, and his name was not the focus of the meeting.
Officials in the US administration confirmed that the appearance of names in those files does not necessarily imply wrongdoing, explaining that the documents included unconfirmed rumors about prominent figures' connections with Epstein, and Trump's name was among hundreds of other names listed.
Trump was also informed that senior Justice Department officials do not intend to release more documents related to the investigation, a decision supported by the President.
In response, the White House described the report as a continuation of "fake news stories" targeting Trump, accusing Democrats and liberal media of fabricating such news.
However, a White House official later told Reuters that the administration does not deny Trump's name being among the files collected by Bondi in February.
In a joint statement, Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the files do not justify opening further investigations or taking any legal action, indicating that they formally requested the court to open grand jury proceedings as part of the periodic testimonies presented to the President.
It is worth noting that the Justice Department announced in early July that it found no basis to continue investigating the Epstein case and did not level any charges against Trump related to the case.
Trump had previously stated that his friendship with Epstein ended many years ago, before the latter's legal violations were revealed.
Epstein was found hanged in his cell at a New York prison in 2019, in an incident classified by forensic medicine as suicide, while awaiting trial on charges related to sex trafficking and exploiting minors.
