In a new escalation of pressure on India, Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House and one of Donald Trump's top aides, accused New Delhi of financially supporting Russia in the Ukraine war by purchasing Russian oil.
This came yesterday, Sunday, August 3, after ongoing warnings from the Trump administration demanding that India stop these transactions.
Miller stated in remarks to "Fox News": "What Trump said is very clear, India cannot continue to fund the war by buying oil from Russia."
He added: "People will be shocked when they learn that India is closely linked with China in purchasing Russian oil, and this is truly shocking."
These accusations came at a time when Indian government sources confirmed to Reuters that New Delhi will continue to buy oil from Moscow despite U.S. threats.
Additionally, since last Friday, a 25% tariff on Indian products has been imposed due to these trade relations, a step taken by the Trump administration to pressure New Delhi.
Trump has intensified his threats to impose tariffs of up to 100% on U.S. imports from countries that continue to buy Russian oil unless Russia reaches a peace agreement with Ukraine.
However, Miller was keen to downplay the attack, pointing to the "wonderful" relationship that Trump has with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite the current economic and political disagreements.
This escalation comes as part of the increasing U.S. efforts to economically and diplomatically isolate Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where India emerges as a key partner still supporting Moscow through its oil purchases.
