German Chancellor Friedrich Merkel said today, Sunday, that he will work intensively with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to reach a solution to the escalating trade war with the United States.
Merkel told the German radio and television network "ARD": "I discussed this intensively earlier this week with Macron and Ursula von der Leyen," noting that he also had discussions with US President Donald Trump on this issue.
He continued, saying: "We want to now utilize the period of the next two weeks and a half until August 1st to find a solution. And I am fully committed to this."
Trump threatened on Saturday to impose a 30% tariff on goods coming from Mexico and the European Union starting from August 1st, after the failure of weeks-long negotiations with the US's key trading partners to reach a comprehensive trade agreement.
