During a noteworthy statement at a press conference held in Singapore, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that recognizing a Palestinian state is "not just a moral duty, but a political demand," emphasizing that Europe should strengthen its position towards Israel if the latter does not respond adequately to the severity of the humanitarian situation in Gaza in the coming hours or days. Macron stressed that the European Union should review its agreements with Israel, especially the partnership agreement that stipulates respect for human rights, hinting at the possibility of imposing sanctions if violations continue, saying: "We must strengthen our stance... because this is a necessity today." Regarding peace efforts, Macron referred to the upcoming international conference to be hosted by France and Saudi Arabia between June 17 and 30 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, aiming to revive the two-state solution. He considered establishing a Palestinian state under certain conditions a political and ethical necessity, listing those conditions, including: * Releasing the hostages held in Gaza since Hamas attacked southern Israel. * Disarming Hamas. * Excluding Hamas from governing the future Palestinian state. * Palestinian state recognition of Israel and its right to live securely. * Establishing a regional security framework to ensure stability. As part of his Asian tour, Macron is also participating in the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, where he delivered a keynote speech on Friday evening. The forum focuses on issues related to China's growing influence, the war in Ukraine, security threats in Asia, as well as US trade protection policies under President Trump, especially the high tariffs imposed on Asian allies and China. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is also attending the forum for the first time amid escalating rhetoric between Washington and Beijing, and increasing concerns about the future of US military commitments to Taiwan, which also faces threats of up to 32% US tariffs. Macron's statements reflect a shift in France's tone and an increasing European inclination towards exerting real pressure on Israel, in an attempt to impose a new diplomatic path leading to a permanent political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
