A security source confirmed to Reuters that the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is in good condition and is closely following the developments of the Israeli attack that took place early this Friday, June 13th, moment by moment.
The attack targeted nuclear and military facilities inside Iran, causing significant losses among the Iranian leadership.
The Iranian news agency "Nournews" reported that Ali Shamkhani, the advisor to the Supreme Leader, was seriously injured in the attack, while American media confirmed his death due to those injuries.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, announced on state television that Israel and the United States will "pay a high price" in response to the attack that targeted the capital Tehran and sensitive nuclear sites.
Iranian television announced the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander General Qassem Soleimani, along with a number of nuclear scientists, in the Israeli strike carried out at dawn.
Israel stated that it targeted Iranian nuclear sites to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons, while Iranian media and witnesses reported intense explosions hitting the country's main uranium enrichment facility.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strike as a "decisive moment in Israel's history," confirming that the operation also targets Iranian scientists and missile factories, and will continue for several days.
Israel declared a state of emergency in anticipation of retaliatory attacks from Iran using missiles and drones.
In his first comment, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei acknowledged the deaths of several military leaders and nuclear scientists, warning:
"Israel should expect severe punishment."
"It has prepared for itself a bitter and painful fate with its attack on us."
