Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed that his country is making serious steps towards improving relations with Syria, noting the existence of effective security and military coordination between the two sides, under the auspices of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He pointed out that work is underway to strengthen the relationship with Syria in security and military matters, and that the demarcation of borders between the two countries is a fundamental item in this process, explaining that Lebanon is awaiting an official envoy from Damascus with the aim of elevating the relationship to a higher level.
Aoun spoke about economic cooperation between Beirut and Damascus, clarifying that it comes within the positions regarding the American envoy's paper to Syria, Thomas Barak, which has turned into a Lebanese paper after incorporating amendments and notes from the Lebanese side.
He confirmed that this paper will not be officially adopted without the approval of all concerned parties.
He indicated that the American paper represents a roadmap for a ceasefire since 2024, and includes items related to the Israeli withdrawal, the release of prisoners, revitalizing the Lebanese economy, reconstruction, in addition to the demarcation of borders with Syria.
He also praised Syria's positive stance on this paper.
Aoun commended the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, stating that Riyadh played an important role in ending the presidential vacuum and provided significant support to Lebanon in its crises, and seeks to enhance Lebanese-Syrian relations under its sponsorship.
He emphasized that his priority as president is to achieve security and stability, stressing that Lebanon welcomes any external support as long as it does not interfere in its internal affairs.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, the Lebanese president reiterated his country's firm rejection of the resettlement of Palestinian refugees, explaining that the decision to disarm the camps was made by the Palestinian Authority, as part of joint efforts to achieve stability.
