Jordan has announced the thwarting of a new attempt to smuggle drugs from Syrian territories, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat smuggling operations across its northern borders.
The Jordanian Anti-Narcotics Department, in cooperation with customs and security agencies at the Jaber border crossing with Syria, managed to seize a shipment vehicle attempting to bring a large quantity of narcotics into the country.
Colonel Amer Al-Saratawi, the spokesperson for the Jordanian Public Security Directorate, explained that the operation was based on prior information about the intention of an individual of Arab nationality, in coordination with elements inside Jordan, to smuggle large quantities of drugs through a shipment vehicle.
The vehicle was identified, monitored until its arrival at the crossing, where it was searched, revealing 200,000 narcotic pills hidden inside one of its tires.
Simultaneously with the seizure operation, security forces conducted a raid that led to the arrest of two individuals who were preparing to receive the shipment inside Jordan. The relevant authorities have begun interrogating the detainees to uncover more details about the involved network.
This comes in the context of the security escalation on the Jordanian-Syrian borders, as both sides previously announced the formation of a joint security committee to combat smuggling and secure the borders, during the visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani to Jordan in January.
It is worth noting that Jordan has repeatedly announced in recent years the thwarting of dozens of attempts to smuggle weapons and drugs across its borders with Syria, some of which indicated the involvement of groups linked to Iran-backed militias.
Despite Tehran's denial of involvement in such activities, Amman continues its efforts to counter all security breaches that threaten its internal security and social stability.
