Italy Prevents Takeoff of Surveillance Plane to Rescue Migrants

The Italian Civil Aviation Authority confirmed today, Friday, that the "Sea Bird 1" aircraft belonging to the "Sea-Watch" group has been placed under administrative detention.
The authority stated that it took this action after being informed by the Italian Coast Guard that the pilot of the "Sea Bird 1" did not notify the relevant authorities of an emergency at sea.
"Sea-Watch" described the detention of the aircraft as "a new escalation in the Italian government's war against civil human rights monitoring in the Mediterranean."
Italy has temporarily halted dozens of charity rescue ships and enacted a decree last year allowing similar measures against aircraft operated by charitable organizations.
