Italy approves the construction of the Sicily Bridge amid severe criticism

The project to build the 3.7-kilometer-long bridge has been under discussion since at least the late 1960s as a tool for developing southern Italy, which suffers from poverty.
The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has prioritized this project and allocated 13.5 billion euros over the next ten years for the construction of the project and its surrounding facilities.
The League party, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, stated that the ministerial committee for economic planning and sustainable development has given final approval for the project in a meeting in Rome.
The Messina Strait Company, which oversees the project, announced that the construction of the bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2032.
Meanwhile, the project has faced strong opposition from skeptics regarding the feasibility of building such a bridge in a seismically active area. Many fear exceeding the estimated costs, potential environmental damage, and mafia manipulation of construction contracts.
