After a brief ceasefire, the atmosphere in the sector changed as the Israeli army resumed its military operations, this time targeting Nasser Hospital building in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, through an airstrike that killed journalist Hassan Aslih, who was receiving treatment there following a previous injury in an attack on a journalists' tent weeks ago, which resulted in the death of two of his colleagues. The Israeli army stated that the airstrike targeted a "command and control center for Hamas inside the hospital," confirming that the site was being used for "terrorist activities," accusing the movement of using civilians as human shields, a recurring accusation in the war that broke out on October 7, 2023. This escalation came just hours after the release of the Israeli-American soldier Aidan Alexander, 21 years old, who had been held by Hamas since October 2023, and was handed over to the International Red Cross, a move interpreted by some analysts as an attempt by Hamas to gain international support before resuming fighting. Alexander was considered the last living prisoner with American citizenship held by Hamas. Despite Alexander's release, there are still 57 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, with estimates indicating that 34 of them have died. The movement has also held the remains of another Israeli soldier since 2014. With military operations continuing, civilian casualties persist, with the Palestinian death toll reaching at least 52,862 people according to the Hamas Health Ministry, including 2,749 since Israel resumed its strikes on March 18 after a ceasefire that lasted nearly two months. The new airstrike on the hospital has added a new chapter to the tragedy of the healthcare sector in Gaza, which is under immense pressure due to ongoing blockade and severe shortages in equipment and medical staff.
